With a strong core of top players and a team in need of a boost in goals, the Buffalo Sabres were arguably the best in the NHL this season, according to the NHL Awards.

The Sabres had 11 players named to the All-Star Game and were tied for the league lead in scoring with 22 goals.

Buffalo also had the NHL lead in goals scored with 59 and tied for second in power play goals with 17.

The club had the second-most points in the playoffs with 39, behind only the Pittsburgh Penguins with 48.

The Sabres finished with their second straight 100-point season and became the first team in NHL history to do so with a 50-goal season, while the Penguins’ 52-game winning streak also gave them a 100-goal plateau.

The Penguins had the league’s second-best record and won their first division title in franchise history, but the team was swept in the first round by the Toronto Maple Leafs in six games.

The New York Rangers were the only other team to win their first-round series.

The Philadelphia Flyers, who went to the Stanley Cup Final as the defending champions, won their third straight title.

The Flyers have won six consecutive Stanley Cups, including four in the past seven seasons.

The Pittsburgh Penguins, the reigning Stanley Cup champions, finished with a record of 16-16-5.

They will face the St. Louis Blues in the Stanley Final on Sunday at 7:30 p.m.

ET.

The Calgary Flames were one of three teams that had a record in the top three in scoring this season.

They had the third-best goal differential at +6.5.

Calgary had the best power play (29.9 percent) and was second in goals (18) and power play points (41).

The Buffalo Sabres had the fourth-best power play in the League, scoring at a league-best +2.6 goals per game.

The Edmonton Oilers won the Stanley Trophy as the best franchise in the National Hockey League and had the seventh-best offence in the entire League.

The Oilers were fifth in goals with 81, while Calgary was first with 47.

The Winnipeg Jets were one team that was expected to be in the hunt for the Stanley Finals and had a strong playoff run.

The team had the 10th-best overall record and tied the New York Islanders for the best record in their division.

The Jets won their second consecutive playoff series, defeating the Philadelphia Flyers in six playoff games.
